Floriculture & Horticulture

About Us

PJ Flowers Ltd is a subsidiary of Wetfarm. Located in central highlands of Kenya in Limuru Kiambu County, 15Km from Nairobi.

The place is ideal for Horticulture, Floriculture, Tea and Dairy farming. The farm has a total area of 30 acres (12.2 hec). It was established in 1981 as a mixed farm with the main farming systems incorporating horticulture and animal husbandry.

Due to good soils, suitable climate, proximity to Nairobi and a well developed infrastructure in form of irrigation systems, power supply and a cold storage system, the farm’s management decided to diversify into floriculture.

We specialize in summer flowers and High fillers with the main market being European Union countries, an average market share in Middle East and consolidated consignments to the US and Australia.

Meet the team

PJ Flowers Director

Elizabeth W. Thande

Managing Director

I began my professional career in the formal sector employment where I worked for ten years before moving into full -time private agricultural production. Horticultural crops have a reasonable profit margin, which is realised by the ultimate exporters while the producers themselves barely break even.

I had a vision of making it in the farming industry. I identified several strategies to overcome the production and marketing hurdles affecting myself and the community at large. These included reasonable volumes of our produce and limited access to credit facilities, for the majority of small-scale farmers.

In quest for market information, I joined the Fresh Produce Exporters Association of Kenya (FPEAK) and rose from the position of an ordinary member to a Board Director. I realized that having the right networks helps in this business as a result I became a member of certain associations:

  • African Women Agribusiness Network –KE- (AWAN-KE) current Chairperson
  • East African Women in Business Platform- Executive Member(EAWiBP)
  • Kenya Professional Association of Women in Agriculture and Environment. –Planning Committee Member
  • Organization of Women in International Trade –OWIT
  • United Success – A World Women Entrepreneur Organization
  • Member of the Business Ireland Kenya- connecting Kenyan business companies with Irish Business Networks.

Awards

  • 2013 TIAW Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
  • 2014 Enterprising Women of the Year Winner AWARD.

Retired Director

  • Fresh Produce Exporters Association of Kenya-FPEAK

Sorghum

Cereals

Sorghum – is a cereal grain that grows as tall as corn but has various uses apart from human and animal consumption. At our farm, we grow sorghum to improve our soils, and more importantly as a trap crop to divert the birds from destroying and eating other crops e.g. buds of our flowers and maize. Instead of harming the birds, we try to create a friendly environment for them and other wildlife, e.g. hare, Rabbits, Antelope and Porcupine.

Craspedia

Delphiniums

Delphiniums

However, some new varieties are more tolerant of heat. Different varieties have different flower colours such as blue, red, white, pink and yellow. The height of the plant ranges from 60cm – 90cm and has a vase life of 10- 14 days.
